Newell Elementary School is a vibrant and dynamic learning community. Dedicated to providing the highest quality education for every student, the school devotes its energy to providing the very best learning experience for students. The school constantly challenges itself with high expectations and continually involves the community in the education of each student. All subject area programs and curricula are coordinated with the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards and the Common Core State Standards.
Our school's academic program is designed to challenge every student. Giving our students the educational opportunities and experiences that enable them to apply their knowledge to "real" life is critical to our school's success. As often as possible, lessons integrate technology and other content areas so that students can see that valuable connection between subject areas.
We believe that the education of the whole child is essential. Through a multitude of programs, the school demonstrates a true commitment to character education. Through direct instruction and role-playing, students learn to solve their own problems and take responsibility for their actions. Many primary grade classes take part in "Morning Meeting"- a component of the Responsive Classroom Program - that provides opportunities for socialization and group problem solving. Our students in the upper grade levels also receive instruction in Conflict Resolution and participate in the Peer Mediation process. In addition, various activities such as the Walk-a-thon, Fourth Grade Future Leaders, Random Acts of Kindness Week, No Name Calling Week, and other focused topics fill the calendar with character education opportunities for every student. Lastly, the students of Newell Elementary School model our CARES approach to everything they do within our school as well as within our town community. CARES stands for Cooperation, Assertion, Responsibility, Empathy, Self-Control. Weekly announcements are made by our 3rd and 4th grade students reminding all of our students how Newell CARES.
Parent involvement in Newell Elementary School is welcomed and encouraged. Our very supportive Parent Teacher Association provides a major link with all our elementary parents. It organizes and funds many annual school activities such as educational assemblies, book fairs, family nights, Random Acts of Kindness Week and Earth Week. Many parents serve as instructional volunteers in many of the elementary classrooms. A monthly parent newsletter keeps our parents informed of happenings in the school and facilitates the continuation of our current home-school relationship.
As a dynamic community of learners we continue to look for ways to improve our educational program. Students, parents, teachers and staff are all involved in this process, which will ensure that our students' educational and developmental needs continue to be met in years to come.
