Dear Family,

Today all of the readers at Newell Elementary School participated in a “Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge Kick-off.” We know that summer can be a season full of learning opportunities or learning losses. Did you know that students who score in the 90th percentile on standardized tests read almost two million words per year outside of school? According to Scholastic, that’s more than 200 times more words than a student in the 10th percentile, who reads only 8,000 words outside of school per year.

To combat the “summer slide” Newell Elementary School is participating in the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge, a free reading program dedicated to inspiring kids to read more books this summer. Now in its 12th year, the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge invites kids to log the minutes they spend reading as they Read for the National Record. Kids can participate in weekly challenges, earn digital rewards, enter sweepstakes to win fabulous prizes, find great books to read and more! New this year, as part of the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge, kids and families can help get at least 200,000 books to kids in book deserts-areas with limited or no access to books!

Please see https://www.scholastic.com/summer/home/ for more information.

In addition to the goal of contributing toward the National Record, our school will be encouraging reading by attempting to beat schoolwide and classroom goals.

> If students read for 500 thousand minutes this summer, students will participate in a scavenger hunt with prizes for extra recess and no homework!

> If students read for 1 million minutes this summer, they will get to watch Mrs. Huggins dance a funny dance in a Dinosaur costume!

> If students read for 1.5 million minutes this summer, Mrs. Huggins will be getting pranked by Mr. Guterl!

>The 2018-19 homeroom class logging the most minutes for each grade level will earn a Super Reader Pizza Party Reunion with their classmates from the 2018-19 school year.

> To support our students with the Reading Challenge, we will have our One Book, One School summer reading activity!! More information to follow!

Here’s how you can help your child sharpen reading strategies:
